Pallikarnai revisted
On Sunday 25th Feb, a few of us from MNS visited the Pallikarnai marshes to see the pelicans. It was a hot day, but we were delighted when we saw the birds. There were so many varities, and the marshes abound with birdlife inspite of the pollution and the garbage. We saw:
Purple moorhens (lots)
Black winged stilts (lots)
Little grebes (lots)
Some type of duck - I have to see my notebook to update this
Purple herons (2)
Common sandpiers (few)
Marsh sandpipers (few)
Wood sandpipers (few)
Common snipes (2)
Little ringed plover (lots)
Red wattled lapwing
Greenshank
Pied kingfisher
Yellow wagtail
Black bittern
Kesterl, hovering over the garbage
Shikra
Common kite
Rosy pastors (lots)..kind of brownish colour, not exactly rosy
Spot billed pelicans (about 100)
Marsh warbler
Openbill stork
Painted stork
Little, median and cattle egrets
Pond herons, mynas, ashly wood swallows
So it was a good time we had. The place is really becoming polluted but the birds were there.
